    year 2009 in review...
West Coast Holiday – Sedona

King Clemons

Monday morning October 12 Carol, King and Kitka left the Fort in freezing rain and met up with Sharon and Dusty Johnson and hit McD in Longmont for pancakes. We then headed out cross country via US 285 across the center of Colorado towards Sedona and the 356 Registry West Coast Holiday. The roads and weather cleared up and we had smooth sailing all the way. Lunch in Del Norte proved that some of the best pie around was there at Boogies.

Onward and upward over “Wolf Creek Pass going across the Great Divide” took us to Cortez, the Holiday Express and Coco’s for a great meal and well deserved sleep.

Next morning off we go but wooops! Greenie won’t start.  Well after a couple of hours Dusty and King find the tab on the points had broken off.  Three different sets of replacement points and still nothing.  A guy from Mancos about 15 miles away was called in and put a 4th set in and viva life. But smoke galore, just like a smoker for fish.

Taking it to the airport and renting a “356S” Suzuki we were finally off to Gallup where the famous El Rancho provided dinner.  We hit Flagstaff and had the best and fastest drive at midnight through Oak Creek Canyon believable.  Ah- the King’s Ransom Hotel, site of a CCC camp in earlier times. Neat.

Well, next morning we’re hunting the “Poco”.  We (out here) know it’s “little” but that’s no help.

Our hotel, designated the overflow hotel for the event, doesn’t know where the event is nor does the Chamber.

All the roads are torn up and traffic is barely moving, so it’s not hard to find a 356.  The event is at the Radisson Hotel (Poco Diablo) about 3 miles to the south in torn up unpaved roads.  Sharon and Dusty are trailering and we have the 356S (3 passengers, 5 luggage, and 6 eyes) in training so no sweat.

Arrival, registration, goodies and we’re off on an unannounced self guided gimmick rally with questions. Sharon and Dusty tied for first place in the event and won a helicopter tour of the area. Even though they had lived in Sedona for time, they saw places they had never seen before.

That night we had an “October Fest” at a local brewery, complete with a Polka from Rosie and Roland.

Between daily drive outs and travel we did about 2500 miles, and our club provided 21 participants; Ginnie and Dick Bartlett, Helen and Roger Carlsen, Phil Carney, Carol and King Clemons, Val and Tom Conway, Lorie and Spike Howard, Al Johnsen, Sharon and Dusty Johnson, Barb and Jim Kellogg, Joe Leoni, Rosie and Roland Lonert, Renee and Roger Shapiro.

The car count was about 247 with 195 in the concours. Despite the event being the 50th anniversary of the 356B “B in Sedona” the 356A had the most in the concours. It was a real treat to sit on the veranda of the dining room and gaze at the 356 splendor on the green at their golf course.

During the event on drive outs we had 3 more break downs.  A couple from Mass, broke a valve spring and a fellow from Louisiana had a fan sheer off (leaving the bolted part attached) which demolished the oil cooler.  Both were repaired at the event and the LA car won the event in his class. Helen and Roger Carlsen from Basalt and our club lost a rod and so it and the Clemons’ are under repair.

Carol, Kitka and I picked up a U Haul in Cortez.  We were upgraded to a 24 ft moving van and a 14 ft trailer so it took about 40 ft of unit to get Greenie back to Norm Miller.  We broke two rings on different cylinders and burned an exhaust valve.  Such is life.  Kitka got the passenger seat and Carol rode shotgun in the jump seat.

All 21 of us are back safe and had fun, we ate and lied too much and are ready to plan for next year.

July 25 event at Custom Auto

by Gary Moschetti

No neon.  No flashy real estate.  No glitzy showroom.  No mega-buck car haulers.  No big egos.  Only a small sign lets you know you're at Custom Auto in Loveland.  The shop is low-key but spend some time there with the terrific crew that works for Dave Crouse and you'll soon realize that the place is full of magic!  Huge thanks to Dave for inviting us!

Our Gang + Jeffrey Cole       Nice Ford

You know, people who are truly good at what they do are generally the last ones to tell you so.  I think the same can be said about shops, too.  Custom Auto doesn't need any glitz because they are the real deal.  Look around the work space.  Have you ever seen so many mills, lathes, welders, box breaks, presses, English wheels, bead rollers, louver presses, metal shears, and tools I frankly didn't know what they were for!  Plus a paint booth you wouldn't believe!  And these guys know how to use this stuff; the evidence is all around you!

   Jeffrey Cole’s 57 Chevrolet

Rex Rogers greeted us with a tour of the display area and then showed us around the shops.  Rex was a wonderful host as were all the guys--I'm sure I'll omit somebody here but thanks go to Dustin Nere, Jake Yenny, Fred Frank and Roy Caufman for treating us so well!  You couldn't have been more pleasant or accommodating!  We were given complete access to the entire shop, which included not only the equipment, but also hot rods, drag cars, custom cars, restored cars; everything from an early Ford flathead truck getting a complete restoration to a '63 Ferrari 250 GT/L  in for some belly pan work, to a wild teardrop shaped Detroit concept car with an aluminum body--and all of it built to period correct specs and done with the highest level of skill.  Really. These guys won "Most Significant Hot Rod" at Pebble Beach in 2007.  Every car appears to be built to the same level of quality (i.e., over the top).  My favorite had to be the Bell Engine Crankshaft Special, a red mid-engine flathead 1940s dragster with exhaust pipes coming right through the sheet metal; then again, there was that black three window coupe, and ooh, the striping on that thing!  Dave's striper, Alan Johnson, is a legend in his own right.

                                                                1964 250 GT Ferrari

A few hours at Custom Auto is very much like being at the Bugatti shop in Berthoud.  The shop machinery is similar, the materials aren't very different, the skill level is the same, what the people are doing is about the same, the patience required is identical; the rest just boils down to the difference between things French and things American.  Sure, an ordinary hot rod is nowhere near the equivalent of a Bugatti, but Custom Auto isn't an ordinary builder; take a look at what's going on there you'll see the similarity is much greater than the difference! Great Body Work

Enjoy the pictures that accompany this article and then go to www.realhotrods.com for more detail on each car.  I promise you, we will go back.  And if you like the places where the magic lives, why not join us?   If you do, I bet you'll like Custom Auto!

Tebo Event

WOW!!!   Thanks to all of those bodies that showed up for the Tebo's event. There were about 100 people that showed up and visited the car collection not all Porsche people, some from other car clubs were there too.

The cars brought back lots of memories for all that were there what their grandpa drove a lots of cars that our own mothers and fathers drove or wanted to drive. Sure brought memories back for me, especially the Ford

Victoria my dad bought and brought home and kept for only a week because it was a pink and white crown and he was getting such a rachion from all his bodies about owning a pink car, so he traded it in , don't remember what he brought home to replace it but he really never fell in Love with any car we had .  Much different than I fall in Love all and never want to get rid of any of them as you can see in our garage.

Back to tebo's it was a great day and I think all enjoyed their visit. Those of you that couldn't make it maybe another time. I was glad to go the second time because there are so many cars I didn't get to see all of them the first time but picked up on where I left off the first time and  enjoyed the back to the future trip. After the visit to Tebo's we went to the steak house to eat and visit with each other was lots of good food and good conversation.  We have such a good group of people and Rich & I have enjoyed all the friendships we have made though the years. And all the fun events we have went to all the years we have been in the club.

Thanks Again for the fun Year of being Prez
